Production notes

The colors of abandonment

The so-called Volksprater, a huge amusement park in Vienna, is visited each year by millions of people old and young, local and foreign. Its main attraction, the ferris wheel, was built in 1896/97 and is today one of the landmarks of the Austrian capital.

This series documents the backside of the park and shows old entertainment businesses that aren't in use anymore. The magic of those pictures lies in their colors, which are slightly off. This effect was created through the use of expired Ektachrome 64 film.

Even though the film was more than 20 years past its expiry date, it still produced good results, although it is impossible to predict the color rendition of the slides. This helped however, to create the intended look of the series.

All pictures of the series were produced with Nikon F80, 35/2.
