Commissioned portraits - finding a unique perspective and the best light

When it comes to producing authentic and true portraits, the task of the photographer is to find and record those subtle nuances in the face and gesture of the portrayed person that are truly characteristic. This is not a technical issue, but a function of chemistry - between the persons in front of and behind the camera. Thus, a portrait session is not a quick thing to do.
On the contrary: it takes some good preparation to understand the nature of the person being portrayed - and to find and see those visual traits that best reflect it. So, for portrait work of any kind, be it business or editorial, I always suggest a preparatory meeting that enables both parties to get to know each other and to define the desired results of the production in advance.
