On 22nd April 1945, one of the earliest Nazi concentration camps was liberated by the Red Army: Sachsenhausen, located 35 km north of Berlin. Between 1936 and 1945 some 30,000 inmates of the camp died from exhaustion, disease, malnutrition, pneumonia, etc. due to poor living conditions, and abuse. Many were executed or died as the result of brutal medical experimentation. During wartime years, most victims were Russian prisoners of war. After the Soviet forces had liberated Sachsenhausen, they converted it into "Special Camp No. 1". Between 1945 and 1950, roughly 60,000 former Nazi officials, collaborators and political enemies were detained there. 12,000 of them died in the camp. The series was produced on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the liberation. |
