Since the late 1970s, Berlin has always been a fertile ground for street art. Over the past 35 or 40 years, a countless number of works have been sprayed, tagged, glued in the city, and some attempts were made to document the versatility of the artists and their works.

With Berlin Walls, I have initiated a large scale project, trying to catch the spirit of all those murals, stencil paintings, cut-outs etc., in order to come up with something like a catalogue of contemporary street art in Berlin. Due to the volatile nature of this particular art form, some works that are shown here won't probably exist anymore in a few days, weeks or months.

Cityscapes

It was a great privilege to travel around Japan for five weeks in the summer of 2010. I was on an assignment for a German magazine, writing a story about the Henro pilgrimage trail on the Japanese island Shikoku, where I spent three weeks walking from temple to temple, meeting many interesting people, interviewing monks and managers, and seeing an awful lot of situations in the streets that just had to be recorded.
Monochrome Japan is only a tiny selection of those 5,000 frames that found their way onto film or sensor - a selection and collection that was featured by Vogue and shown by St. Gaudy Gallery, Berlin, in 2011. Whenever I look at these pictures, it is a constant reminder that I want to go back to Japan - not only to finish the Henro trail, of which I only walked 350 kilometers, equaling roughly a quarter, but also to see all those lovely people again, whom I met on the trail and elsewhere in beautiful Japan.
